New Yellow Armband Initiative for U18 Referees

The Football Association Logo

The FA has announced the introduction of yellow armbands for all Under-18 referees from July 2025.

This initiative is designed to improve respect for young referees, support their development, and tackle poor behaviour towards officials across grassroots football.

Why is this initiative being launched?

  1. Visibility
The yellow armband will clearly identify a referee as being under 18 years old, making them easily recognisable to players, coaches, and spectators.
  2. Protection
The armband acts as a visual reminder to treat young referees with respect, patience, and understanding.
  3. Development
By reducing negative behaviour, young referees can focus on learning, improving their officiating skills, and enjoying their matchday experiences.

Implementation

  • Distribution: Yellow armbands will be distributed to all U18 referees by Durham FA starting July 2025. Please look out for communication from Durham FA about collection or delivery.
  • Usage: All U18 referees are encouraged to wear their armband during every match they officiate.
  • Goal: This initiative is part of a wider effort to retain young referees by creating a positive and supportive environment for their development.
